The school year is coming to an end and what better way to start the summer holidays than a trip to the circus!
We were kindly gifted a family ticket to visit the Santus Circus, which is currently in Ashford at the Great Chart Recreation Ground. The boys were absolutely delighted and I was really pleased to be able to spend some really lovely family time together.
We arrived about half an hour early to collect our tickets. We were delighted to find that there was plenty of parking close to the circus. The queue for the box office was quite long but it moved quickly so we weren’t kept waiting and the cashiers were both extremely friendly. (In fact, I think the gentlemen who served us was also the Ringmaster!)
Once inside the tent, we were greeted by some extremely friendly circus performers who welcomed us to the show. I would recommend arriving early so you can get a front on view of the arena. We were sat round to the sides and had a great view still but for the absolute optimum view the middle seats would be perfect! You are only allowed to take water in with you so we bought some drinks at the refreshments stand. We thought these were fairly reasonable at £1 each. Richard had come straight from work and so treated himself to a burger which was £3.50 which again we felt was quite reasonable and not going to break the bank!
In the first half, we were treated to some amazing acts including some dancing with hula hoops (that doesn’t really do justice to her act. At one point she was hula hooping with about ten hoops at once!), spectacular ariel displays and a high wire display. Rowan was entranced by the performers in the air. We were particularly impressed by the man spinning round at high speed holding on by just his teeth.
One of Rory’s favourite parts was the high wire performance. He especially liked it when they cycled a tiny bike across the wire. There was also some leap frogging on the wire which again was very impressive.
During the interval there was the opportunity to have your photo taken with a transformer. There was also refreshments, helium balloons and light wands for sale.
There was even more fun to be had in the second half which kicked off with a comedy trampoline routine from Lucien the Clown. The boys liked it when he got his head stuck at one point! There was also an amazing contortionist who was able to get herself into a very small box amongst many other performers.
These all built up to an absolutely breath taking finale – The Flying Trapeze. A team of four men performed amazing stunts using the trapeze. They flew through the air whilst the audience gasped and whooped! There were times when up to three people were on the trapeze with two flying across the arena at one point. It really was a spectacular end to the show.
We came away chatting about the circus all the way up until bedtime and I’m sure the boys have gone to bed dreaming of acrobats, contortionists, clowns and flying trapeze! We would definitely recommend the Santus Circus.
The Santus Circus will be at Great Chart Recreation Ground until Monday 15th July and then will be at the Tenterden Recreation Ground from Thursday 18th July to Sunday 21 July.
