Bathtime Songs

bathtime songs
We absolutely love singing.  Just like reading, it’s a great way to build language and vocabulary.  We will take any opportunity to sing in our house and bathtime is a particularly great time to do it.

If you have very little ones and are having a go at signing, bathtime is a great time to sing and sign as your baby or toddler will be in a confined space and so it is easy to keep their attention.

Here is a small selection of our favourite bathtime songs.  I’ve included a few traditional ones and some less so, as sometimes you just need reminding of the classics!  Also, as with many songs for young children, there are lots of counting songs.  With these counting songs, if you have the appropriate toys, its great to line them up on the side of the bath and as the creatures disappear in the songs knock them into the bath water.  As well as being hugely entertaining for your little one, it’s a great visual representation of numbers which is really important for consolidating number skills.

Five Little Ducks
Five little ducks went swimming one day,
Across the pond and far away,
Mama duck said quack, quack, quack, quack,
But only four little ducks came back.

Four little ducks went swimming one day…
Three little ducks went swimming one day…
Two little ducks went swimming one day…
One little duck went swimming one day…

No little ducks went swimming one day,
Across the pond and far away,
Daddy duck said quack, quack, quack, quack,
And all five ducks came swimming back.

Five Little Crabs (Tune: Ten Green Bottles)
Five little crabs playing on the beach,
Five little crabs playing on the beach,
And ifone little crab should scuttle out of reach,
There’d be four little crabs playing on the beach.

Four little crabs playing on the beach…
Three little crabs playing on the beach…
Two little crabs playing on the beach…
One little crabs playing on the beach…

The Big Ship Sails on the Ally-Ally-Oh
The big ship sails on the ally-ally-oh
The ally-ally-oh, the ally-ally-oh
Oh, the big ship sails on the ally-ally-oh
On the last day of September.

The captain said it will never, never do
Never, never do, never, never do
The captain said it will never, never do
On the last day of September.

The big ship sank to the bottom of the sea
The bottom of the sea, the bottom of the sea
The big ship sank to the bottom of the sea
On the last day of September.

We all dip our heads in the deep blue sea
The deep blue sea, the deep blue sea
We all dip our heads in the deep blue sea
On the last day of September.

Barges
Out of my window looking in the night,
I can see the barges flickering light.
Silently flows the river to the sea,
As the barges go by silently.

Barges, I would like to go with you,
I would like to sail the ocean blue.
Barges, have you treasures in your hold?
Do you fight with pirates brave and bold?

Out of my window looking in the night,
I can see the barges flickering light.
Starboard shining green and port is shining red,
I can see the barges from my bed.

Barges, I would like to go with you,
I would like to sail the ocean blue.
Barges, have you treasures in your hold?
Do you fight with pirates brave and bold?

When I Was One
When I was one
I sucked my thumb
The Day I went to sea
I climbed aboard a pirate ship
And the captain said to me:

We’re going this way, that way
Forwards and Backwards
Over the Irish Sea
A bowl of jelly to fill my belly
And that’s the life for me!

When I was Two, I tied my shoe…
When I was Three , I banged my knee…
When I was Four, I knocked at the door…
When I was Five, I did a jive…

A sailor went to Sea, Sea, Sea,
A sailor went to sea, sea, sea,
To see what he could see, see, see.
But all that he could see, see, see
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea.

A sailor went to chop, chop, chop,
To see what he could chop, chop, chop.
But all that he could chop, chop, chop
Was the bottom of the deep blue chop, chop, chop.
Sea, sea, sea.

A sailor went to knee, knee, knee,
To see what he could knee, knee, knee,
But all that he could knee, knee, knee,
Was the bottom of the deep blue knee, knee, knee.
Chop, chop, chop.
Sea, sea, sea.

A sailor went to sea, chop, knee,
To see what he could see, chop, knee.
But all that he could see, chop, knee
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, chop, knee

Five Little Sandcastles
We are five little sandcastles sitting on the beach,
Watching the boats go by,
Five little sandcastles sitting on the beach,
Watching the seagulls fly,
Five little sandcastles sitting on the beach,
Watching the clouds so high,
When along came a wave,
And washed one away,
And this is what the other ones said

Now we are four little sandcastles sitting on the beach…
Now we are three little sandcastles sitting on the beach…
Now we are two little sandcastles sitting on the beach…

Now I am one little sandcastle sitting on the beach,
Watching the boats go by,
One little sandcastles sitting on the beach,
Watching the seagulls fly,
One little sandcastles sitting on the beach,
Watching the clouds so high,
When along came a wave,
And washed it away,
And now there’s nothing to say.

Great – there are some new ones here for me. Love the one about a belly full of jelly! The silly ones are the best. X (Anita Faulkner)
